Washes, brush control, and paper choice — the gentle on-ramp to painting with water.
Watercolour forgives almost everything except impatience. This beginner's guide walks through the only four skills that matter at the start: loading the brush, laying a flat wash, lifting paint back off, and letting layers dry completely between passes.
The three-brush starter kit
You need a large round mop for washes, a medium round for shapes, and a small rigger for lines. Pair them with student-grade tubes in six colours and cold-press cotton paper — the paper matters more than the paint.
Your first week of practice
Paint one small study a day: a sky gradient on Monday, overlapping circles on Tuesday, a simple leaf on Wednesday. By Sunday you will have seven sketches and, more importantly, a feel for how much water your brush actually holds. When you are ready for artist-grade colour, our originals and print sets show what those same washes can become.
